The 2013-2014 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) went live at 12:00AM on 1/1/2013. The FAFSA Website has been updated and now includes some additional tools that should make it a smoother and nicer experience than in the past.
Check out this previous post about how to tackle the FAFSA. The most important documents you’ll need are tax returns, bank statements, driver’s license, Social Security number and investment records. It’s vital to complete and submit your FAFSA as soon as possible as a lot of aid is given on a first come, first served basis. You will also need to apply for a PIN number and both the parent and student will need a PIN. The FAFSA is offered in paper form, but completing it online will certainly save time.
In the event that you have not filed taxes yet and received your returns, you can use last year’s tax returns and update your forms later. You will be able to make edits to the 2013-2014 FAFSA up until mid-September 2014 so you will have plenty of time to update any information.
An IRS Retrieval Tool will go live on February 3, 2013, which you can use to help you. You will be able to access the IRS tax return material that you will need to fill out the FAFSA.
